[ It's late when they get back– because of course it is; what was youth for if not staying out past curfew?
Chloe's car is parked at least a block away from Rachel's house, because as loveable as the old girl was she rattled everywhere she went and left a trail of smoke in her wake. Getting her anywhere close to the house was just asking to be grounded till the end of time.
It's cold out and Chloe hadn't thought to bring a jacket– so Rachel's forced her to pull one arm into her own, pressed her close to Rachel's side and made the both of them make the walk wearing one half of a jacket, like a pair of mismatched siamese twins. Their height difference hardly makes it easy, and Rachel makes no effort to hide her amusement. ]
Remind me never to enter a three-legged race with you.
[ She says, when Chloe trips for the third time and nearly takes the two of them down in one-go.
Still, it's pretty funny– even if all it would take was one misstep on Chloe's part for Rachel to end up with a faceful of asphalt. ]
Shh–!
[ Rachel brings a finger to her own lips once they make it to the driveway. She speaks with it pressed right against her mouth. ]
Or else.
[ She lifts her finger, motions across her neck and rolls her eyes back so the whites stare back at Chloe. Just to really drive the point home, y'know? ]
We can't go through the front or back– we'll trip the stupid alarm... like anyone would be dumb enough to rob the DA's house.
[ Rachel pulls herself out of her jacket, leaving it on Chloe. She slips her hand into her's and leads them around and to the side of the house. There's lattice work that runs all the way up the side of the house like a makeshift ladder. And at the very top is the window to Rachel's room– left open just slightly, because she's a genius, obviously. ]
Ladies first.

[ Ugh, rich people houses. It's like, we get it, you have actual things of value inside, do you have to be such a bitch to get into?
Chloe might be able to sneak into her own house without breaking a sweat, but she's got a perfectly convenient path formed by the tree in the backyard and the garage roof-- not to mention years of experience. The gaps in the lattice don't look quite big enough to contain the whole toe of her boot. Like, maybe? Has Rachel ever climbed this in boots?
Still, it's this or freezing her tits off outside, and Rachel's watching, so chickeing out's not an option. ]
Okay. I am definitely sober enough to make this climb. [ She's only had, what, two beers and a joint? Easy peasy. Rolling her shoulders-- ] Here we go.
[ With a springy step forward, Chloe latches onto the fence and pushes upward. She can just about slot the tip of her boot in the hole. which doesn't make for the steadiest grip, but she can manage. Probably. ]
Alright. I got it. I'm doing it. [ Nice and steady. One step after the other. It's fine to keep babbling as long as she makes sure to whisper, right? ] Man, your parents couldn't have put your room on the first floor? Swap it out for the garage or something-- woah! [ A nearly-missed step has her momentarily teetering, but she catches herself at the last second. ] Still got it!
[ There is no doubt the ascent has never felt this long in all the times Rachel has made it. ]
[ Rachel watches as Chloe begins her climb, a self-satisfied smile on her face. It wasn't a matter of whether or not Chloe would scale the side of her house, but rather a question of when (because she had no choice, and because that's just how the two of them worked– Rachel had ideas, Chloe said yes; because she was loyal, because they were in love, and because Rachel was Rachel and Chloe was Chloe). ]
Dunno'... I kinda' like the whole having to scale the side of the house in the dead of night thing. It's romantic.
[ Rachel is right behind Chloe and clearly having less trouble (because she'd drunk less, had worn a reliable pair of flat converse, and had done this more times than she could count).
If she'd been even a little tipsy before that's forced out of her system when Chloe just nearly slips– Rachel reaches out to grab her on instinct (even though they both know she doesn't have the upper body strength to do anything). ]
Woah, easy there Price. I'm cool with you dying as long as it's with me– but I don't think this is how either of us want to go.
[ And because Rachel is Rachel she makes declarations like that without a second thought. She says it like it's half a joke and half not, so it's hard to tell if she's being serious or not in implying she'd be upset if Chloe up and kicked the bucket without her.
(It's not a joke)
The rest of the climb transpires without much incident; Rachel's room is dimly lit by string lights and pleasantly warm. It's not the first time Chloe has been here after hours, but it's the first time she's been here overnight and under the flag of being "Official". ]
I'll take my jacket back if you're done with it.
[ Never mind that Rachel had forced her into it in the first place. ]
